Давно хотел рассказать о паре своих премиальных бурбонов, которые я так люблю. Но сложилось так, что первым будет рассказ о самом простом и малоизвестном бурбоне, который у меня всегда под рукой. Называется он Old Virginia Kentucky Straight Bourbon и имеет немалую для обычного бурбона выдержку в шесть лет.
Информации по этому виски в интернетах практически нет. Брендом и производством владеет французская компания Le Martiniquaise, которая также владеет несколькими малоизвестными брендами виски, джина и водки. В силу национальных особенностей, продвижение этого бурбона, видимо, идёт больше во Франции. И наверное поэтому в Москве Old Virginia Bourbon свободно можно купить только во французской сети «Ашан». Хотя в последнее время я начинаю встречать бренды Le Martiniquaise (чаще всего скотчи) и в других магазинах.
Именно в Ашане я однажды купил на пробу этот бурбон и теперь не жалею: для несложных коктейлей он вполне подходит.
Немного фактов.
Old Virginia Kentucky Straight Bourbon шестилетней выдержки, крепость 40%ABV, бутылка объемом 0.7 л (явно не для Америки). Производство расположено в Кентукки, США (ну, а где ещё?).
Внешне этот бурбон выглядит обычно – янтарная жидкость, насыщенность цвета средняя.
В чистом виде субъективно (снифтер, 50 мл жидкости, комнатная температура) имел следующие характеристики.
Запах — чернослив, изюм, немного древесного угля, следы ванили и резины.
Вкус умеренно жгучий, кисловатый, но сладкий в конце. Ярко выражены чернослив и древесина дуба, заметны ноты чёрного перца.
Привкус горчащий — уголь, дуб, ядра фруктовых косточек, гвоздика, в конце — лёгкий резиновый оттенок.
Послевкусие средней длины, неяркое; заметны ваниль, древесный уголь и сухофрукты.
В целом, это не тот бурбон, от которого получаешь настоящее удовольствие при употреблении в чистом виде, но причина этого не в пресловутом «самогонном» привкусе, а в аскетичности его вкуса и в отсутствии в нём ярких черт.
Old Virginia Bourbon отличается очень ровным и приятным вкусом, хотя этого оказывается недостаточно для любого, кто знаком с другими выдержанными бурбонами.
Но в коктейлях он более чем уместен, причем даже требовательный к базовому алкоголю Old-fashioned на основе Old Virginia Bourbon оказался весьма неплох.
Я делал этот канонический коктейль без разминания дольки апельсина и даже без традиционного кусочка сахара – просто сахарный сироп, биттер, лёд и виски:
- 45 мл Old Virginia Bourbon,
- 5 мл сахарного сиропа,
- 2 дэш Ангостуры,
- два больших кубика льда.
В стакане соединить все компоненты и размешать. Добавить лёд.
Получается ароматный коктейль со сладким и пряным запахом и со вкусом, очень близким к вкусу чистого бурбона.
Разбавление дает усиление древесной составляющей, но излишняя сухость убирается сахаром, который также удачно закругляет вкус, переводя сладкое окончание в яркий, слегка жгучий привкус сухофруктов и пряностей, прежде всего кардамона и имбиря.
К сожалению, чрезмерное обводнение ведёт к огрублению вкуса и к потере «тела», поэтому этот Old-fashioned нужно пить без излишних промедлений.

I have recently been given a bottle of ‘Old Virginia’
Straight Whiskey Bourbon, aged 8 years.
I am told by the person that gave it to me, that it was the last link with her father, he has been dead in excess of 20 years. She seems to think that it is probably in the order of 30 to 40 years old.
I realize that that whiskey does not mature any more, for being kept in a bottle, but that is no reason not to drink it.
I was interested to find out more about the whiskey,and indeed if it is still in production.I’ts not a brand that I am familiar with, and I am a little reluctant to break the seal at this stage. Cheers, Anthony.

Yes, I saw Old Virginia 8yo Bourbon too but didn’t try it.
I was surprised to know that this brand is so old. I was thinking that it’s a new one…

We bought an Old Virginia bottle today at the Intermarché supermarket in Crans-Salve, France, near the border with Geneva, Switzerland.
We live in Geneva and finding bourbon is always difficult and expensive. My wife and I thought this was some French-made version but are glad to see it is made in the US (we’re Americans and miss our Maker’s Mark and Woodford).
Anyway, the French labels on the Old Virginia bottle read: Guaranteed by the US Government. Now, can that be true?

No, Old Virginia isn’t French-made, it’s just French-owned brand of true American whiskey )
I don’t think that Old Virginia as good as Maker’s Mark or Woodford Reserve but in the areas where no bourbon whiskey available Old Virginia will be decent acquisition.
My question is where is OLD VIRGINIA bourbon bottled……Kentucky or France? I know it is American made.
Barcode starts with 314 so it speaks that the product is from France.
The label (in Russian) speaks that the whiskey is bottled in USA.
I think barcode is right thing so it’s bottled in France.
Labeled in France perhaps? Or specifically for French stores? I don’t know much about barcodes.
I’m also interested in this Whiskey… cheap on the shelves in Australia right now… but not much information about it. I like it a lot more than anything else at it’s price.

I’m not a specialist in barcodes too. I think the Old Virginia bottle that I’ve bought in Russia contains bourbon made in Kentucky and bottled in France. Look at your bottle carefully. It can be different: another label, another barcode.
Anyway this whiskey is low-cost product with taste of low-cost product. If you waiting something special, avoid it. If you need cheap whiskey of satisfactory quality, try it.

I live in France part of the year and for the past 20 years I have used Old Virginia bought in a «super marche». I have been trying to locate some in the US but cannot find any. Can someone tell me if Virginia Gentlemen is distilled by the same firm as Old Virginia ?
It’s hard to say because I never heard about Virginia Gentlemen whiskey. One thing I can say is that I suspect that French company who owned the brand just bought already distilled and aged whiskey spirits in US and bottled it in France.
i think a vintage would taste better. i think these types companies buy defunct usa brands and the quality is poor now and probably lower proof. they probably existed in usa and where good like 30 plus years ago.
